Why it works

New Year’s Eve has a particular problem: it is the night that asks for the most shine, and it is also the longest. Dinner, a party, the countdown, the search for a taxi. A sequin dress is glorious at 9pm and punishing by 1am. This outfit splits the difference by putting all the sparkle below the waist and all the comfort above it.

The oversized grey cashmere is doing more than keeping you warm. Matt, soft and slightly slouchy, it makes the sequins look brighter by contrast, and it stops the skirt reading as costume. Grey and silver are a deliberately cool pairing, a change from the black-and-gold default of the season, and they suit the blue light of a winter midnight.

For a summer New Year’s Eve, the cashmere is replaced by a sequin cami and the boots by strappy sandals or slingbacks. Keep the silver tones, add a light linen blazer for later, and the look stays both sparkly and cool.
