Why it works

Minimalist office dressing is not about owning less; it is about removing every decision you do not need to make before 8am. This outfit is a near-uniform: grey, black and a long coat, repeated with small variations all winter. It works because the shapes are strong enough to carry it. A fitted fine knit on top and a fluid wide-leg trouser below create the classic proportion of slim over full, and the long coat echoes the trousers’ length, so the whole silhouette reads as long and calm.

Grey and black are deliberately chosen over all-black. The mid-grey trouser gives depth and makes the black knit look richer; it also hides the lint and dust that ruin black wool by lunchtime. Loafers keep the look practical for a commute and a long day on your feet.

It is also an outfit that rewards investment. Better wool and better cashmere show most when there is nothing else to look at.

Styling notes

  • Tuck the knit at the front only if the trousers have a waistband detail you want to show; otherwise tuck fully.
  • If the trousers are too long, wear them with a small platform loafer rather than cropping them: the floor-grazing hem is the point.
  • A silver or gold watch and small studs are enough jewellery.
  • For variety, swap the black knit for ivory or icy blue. The rest of the formula stays the same.

The breakdown

  1. High-waisted, front-pleated or flat, with a sharp crease and a hem that just grazes the floor in your loafers. Mid-grey is softer than charcoal and makes black look rich rather than flat.

    Budget
A heavyweight crepe or wool-look trouser; budget for hemming.
    Mid
Wool flannel or wool crepe with a lining to the knee.
    Investment
Worsted wool with a hand-pressed crease and a deep hem.
  2. A crew or slim rollneck in extra-fine merino or cashmere, close-fitting and tucked in (or half-tucked). Fine gauge keeps the top half neat against wide trousers.

    Budget
A merino-blend fine knit; check it is opaque.
    Mid
Extra-fine merino with a clean, narrow rib at cuff and hem.
    Investment
Cashmere at a fine gauge (around 14gg), fully fashioned.
  3. Clean-fronted, no belt, falling below the knee. It should be roomy enough for the knit but not so oversized that it swallows the trouser's line.

    Budget
A wool-blend long coat with a simple collar.
    Mid
Pure wool with a concealed placket.
    Investment
    Double-faced wool or wool-cashmere, unlined and feather-light.
  4. Polished or matt black leather with a slim profile. A slightly chunky sole works if you want more grip, but keep the shape sleek.

    Budget
Leather loafers with a padded insole for long office days.
    Mid
    Blake-stitched calf loafers.
    Investment
Hand-sewn loafers in a fine box calf.
  5. Structured tote

    Black or grey

A clean leather tote that fits a laptop. No logos, minimal hardware. The bag should look like part of the outfit, not an afterthought.

    Budget
    A smooth faux-leather structured tote.
    Mid
A vegetable-tanned leather tote with a laptop sleeve.
    Investment
A hand-stitched leather tote that holds its shape.

Wear it to

  • Office: Exactly as styled for any office from creative to corporate. For client meetings, add a matching grey blazer.

Season

Northern hemisphere. December to February in London, New York, Toronto or Berlin. Add a grey cashmere scarf for the commute.

Southern hemisphere. In southern winter (June to August), wear it in Melbourne or Wellington offices. In milder cities, swap the long coat for a black wool blazer.
