Why it works

Smart casual is the most common dress code in modern offices, and the most misunderstood. This four-piece formula is the reliable answer. A navy blazer, a pale blue oxford, stone chinos and brown loafers have been the backbone of smart casual for decades, and the colours explain why: navy, blue, stone and brown are all mid-tone neutrals that harmonise with each other and with most complexions. There is no clash to manage.

The modern part is the construction. An unstructured blazer has soft shoulders and little padding, so it drapes like a cardigan and moves with you. It looks relaxed and contemporary rather than corporate. The oxford’s button-down collar keeps the open neck tidy, and loafers sit exactly between the formality of a dress shoe and the ease of a trainer.

The result looks polished in a meeting, relaxed at lunch and right at dinner, all without changing a thing.

Styling notes

  • Leave the blazer unbuttoned when seated and the bottom button undone when standing.
  • Roll the sleeves of the oxford one turn under the blazer cuff in warm weather.
  • A navy or brown knitted tie dresses it up for client meetings without changing the outfit.
  • Swap the loafers for white leather trainers on a Friday, or for suede on a date.

The breakdown

  1. Soft shoulders, little or no padding, patch pockets and a textured cloth like hopsack, wool-linen or flannel. It should look like a jacket in its own right, not half of a suit.

    Budget
A cotton or cotton-blend unstructured blazer in navy.
    Mid
Wool hopsack or wool-linen, half-lined, with a soft shoulder.
    Investment
Half-canvassed or unconstructed tailoring in a fine textured wool.
  2. Pale blue oxford shirt

    Pale blue

Button-down collar, worn open at the neck. Oxford cloth has enough texture to sit happily under a casual blazer; poplin would look too formal.

    Budget
Cotton oxford with a properly rolled collar.
    Mid
Heavier oxford cloth with an unlined collar.
    Investment
    Made-to-measure oxford with mother-of-pearl buttons.
  3. Stone chinos

    Stone

Slim-straight or tapered, with a clean hem and no break. Pressed with a light crease for the office.

    Budget
    Cotton-twill chinos with minimal stretch.
    Mid
Heavier cotton twill with a tailored waistband.
    Investment
Italian cotton gabardine or cotton-wool chinos with side adjusters.
  4. Penny loafers in polished mid-brown calf. A loafer sits exactly halfway between the ease of chinos and the polish of a blazer, which is why it settles the outfit.

    Budget
Leather penny loafers with a stitched sole.
    Mid
    Blake-stitched calf loafers.
    Investment
    Goodyear-welted or hand-sewn loafers.
  5. Leather belt and watch

    Brown, steel

A plain brown belt matching the loafers and a simple watch on leather or steel.

    Budget
Leather belt with a simple buckle.
    Mid
    Bridle-leather belt.
    Investment
    Hand-stitched English bridle-leather belt.

Wear it to

  • Office: Most offices, client meetings and presentations. In winter, add a navy merino crew under the blazer.
  • Date Night: Lose the belt-and-chino precision: swap to dark denim and suede loafers.

Season

Northern hemisphere. Wear it through spring and autumn. In summer, switch to a linen blazer and drop the socks; in winter, swap chinos for grey flannels.

Southern hemisphere. The same in reverse: spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May). In a Sydney or Brisbane summer, a wool-linen blazer is cooler.
