Why it works

Poetcore is a mood more than a shopping list: the look of someone who reads on trains and owns at least one book they have never finished. The good news is that it is built entirely from pieces that outlive trends, and many of them are better found secondhand than bought new.

The outfit runs on one contrast. A black turtleneck is flat, dark and intense, and it frames the face like a sketch. Brown herringbone tweed is warm, flecked and visibly old. Put them together and each makes the other more interesting: the tweed looks richer against black, the black looks softer against brown. Dark trousers keep the base quiet so the top half carries the look.

The satchel is what moves it from smart to literary. Structured, buckled and preferably scuffed, it implies a destination: a library, a seminar, a café with a notebook. Wear the blazer a little too big and a little creased. Precision would ruin it.

Styling notes

  • Keep the blazer unbuttoned and a little loose. Too sharp and it reads as office wear.
  • Rumple it slightly: poetcore is better with a few creases.
  • Silver jewellery and a vintage watch suit the mood better than gold.
  • For a softer take, swap the black turtleneck for cream or deep brown.

The breakdown

  1. A medium-gauge wool turtleneck with a slightly slouchy fit. Unlike the fine party rollneck, this one should look lived-in and soft.

    Budget
    A wool-blend or recycled-wool turtleneck.
    Mid
Lambswool or merino in a medium gauge.
    Investment
Heavy cashmere or a hand-framed Scottish lambswool.
  2. Herringbone or Donegal tweed in brown, ideally secondhand and a little worn. Slightly loose is better than too tight. Check charity shops and vintage dealers first.

    Budget
A thrifted tweed blazer, tailored at the sleeves if needed.
    Mid
A new wool tweed blazer in a relaxed fit.
    Investment
Harris Tweed or a heritage British tweed, half-canvassed.
  3. Dark trousers

    Charcoal or black

Straight or wide-leg wool trousers, or black jeans. The point is a dark, unbroken base.

    Budget
    Black straight-leg jeans.
    Mid
Charcoal wool trousers with a relaxed leg.
    Investment
Heavy wool flannel trousers in a wide cut.
  4. Leather satchel

    Chocolate

Structured, buckled, cross-body or carried by the handle. Old and scuffed is ideal; this is the defining accessory of the aesthetic.

    Budget
A faux-leather or canvas satchel with buckles.
    Mid
    A full-grain leather satchel.
    Investment
A heritage British leather satchel that will last a lifetime.
  5. Leather shoes

    Dark brown

Brown leather derbies, loafers or Chelsea boots. Polished but not shiny.

    Budget
Leather derbies with a rubber sole.
    Mid
    Goodyear-welted derbies or boots.
    Investment
    Handmade brogues or boots.

Wear it to

  • Weekend: Bookshops, galleries, cafés and long walks. It is the outfit for wandering.
  • Date Night: A gallery opening or a reading; add a silver ring or a fine chain.

Season

Northern hemisphere. From October to February in London, Paris, New York and anywhere with libraries and rain.

Southern hemisphere. Save it for March to August, when the southern autumn and winter arrive in Melbourne, Dunedin or Hobart.
