Why it works

Workwear appeals because nothing about it pretends. Canvas, denim and leather are tough materials, cut for movement, and they all age in a way that makes them look more personal over time. The chore coat sits at the centre of this look because it is the most adaptable piece in casual menswear: structured enough to look finished, soft enough to throw on over anything.

The editing is what lifts it above a uniform. Ecru rather than the usual navy or brown makes the outfit feel lighter and more deliberate, and it gives raw indigo denim something to contrast against. The olive overshirt adds a second layer of colour and texture without introducing pattern. The fit is tidy throughout: shoulders that fit, a straight jean with a neat turn-up, boots that ground everything.

The beanie is the only piece of pure attitude, and it is what keeps the look from feeling too precious.

Styling notes

  • Keep the chore coat open and the overshirt buttoned. Two open layers look sloppy.
  • A single turn-up of about 3–4cm is cleaner than a deep cuff with modern straight jeans.
  • If ecru feels impractical, a washed navy chore coat does the same job with more forgiveness.
  • Let the boots get scuffed. Polish them twice a year, not every week.

The breakdown

  1. Ecru chore coat

    Ecru

Unstructured, three patch pockets, a simple point collar. Heavy cotton canvas or twill that will soften and crease at the elbows. Fit it to your shoulders with enough room to layer an overshirt beneath.

    Budget
A cotton-twill chore jacket; wash it a few times before wearing to break it in.
    Mid
Heavyweight canvas or moleskin with reinforced stitching.
    Investment
A French-made chore coat in heavyweight canvas or a Japanese duck cotton.
  2. Olive overshirt

    Olive

A flannel or cotton-twill overshirt with chest pockets, worn buttoned as a mid-layer. Olive bridges the ecru and indigo and nods to the M-65 field jacket.

    Budget
Cotton-flannel overshirt in olive or khaki.
    Mid
    Brushed-twill or wool-blend overshirt.
    Investment
A heavyweight wool or military-surplus-style overshirt in a quality cotton sateen.
  3. Raw denim jeans

    Indigo

Straight leg, rigid or near-rigid, with a single small turn-up so it sits cleanly on the boot. Dark, even indigo contrasts best with ecru.

    Budget
    Dark rinse, non-stretch straight jeans.
    Mid
    Raw, unwashed denim around 13–14oz.
    Investment
Japanese or American selvedge denim that fades to your own wear pattern.
  4. Plain or moc-toe lace-ups in oiled brown leather on a crepe or lug sole. Scuffs are welcome.

    Budget
Leather work boots with a cemented sole.
    Mid
Goodyear-welted work boots in oiled leather.
    Investment
Heritage American or British-made boots that can be resoled indefinitely.
  5. Ribbed beanie

    Charcoal or olive

A short, close-fitting beanie in wool or wool-cotton, worn turned up so it sits above the ear. It is the bit of personality.

    Budget
    Acrylic-free cotton-wool rib beanie.
    Mid
    Merino rib beanie.
    Investment
A thick hand-knit fisherman's beanie in undyed wool.

Wear it to

  • Weekend: Coffee, the hardware shop, a long walk, a brewery. It is as comfortable as it looks.
  • Travel: The chore coat's pockets replace a bag for a day trip; the whole outfit forgives creasing.

Season

Northern hemisphere. September to November in the US, UK and Canada. As it gets colder, swap the overshirt for a chunky knit or add a fleece gilet.

Southern hemisphere. Wear it March to May in southern autumn. In milder climates, the chore coat over a white tee and chinos covers late spring too.
