Why it works

Country clothes look good for a simple reason: they were designed to work, and work leaves a beautiful patina. The barn jacket’s boxy shape, cord collar and big pockets are all functional, which is exactly why they look relaxed rather than styled. Paired with a cream knit and riding boots, it reads as instantly, unfussily equestrian.

The proportions are the quiet trick. A hip-length jacket, straight jeans and a knee-high boot divide the body into three clean blocks. Tucking the jeans into the boots creates a long leg line, and the boxy jacket keeps the top half easy. The palette of olive, cream, indigo and cognac is borrowed straight from the landscape it belongs in, so it looks right in a field, a market or a station café.

The one rule: let it get a bit lived-in. A barn jacket that is too pristine looks like a costume.

Styling notes

  • Turn the cord collar up against wind. It is part of the look, not a mistake.
  • Choose a knit that sits at or above the jacket hem; a long jumper peeking out below a boxy jacket shortens you.
  • If the riding boots feel too formal, a lug-sole Chelsea or a lace-up hiking boot keeps the countryside feel.
  • Waxed jackets smell of wax for a season. That is normal.

The breakdown

  1. Boxy, hip-length, with patch pockets and a corduroy collar in a contrasting brown. Waxed cotton gives the authentic, slightly weathered look; dry cotton canvas is lighter and easier to wash.

    Budget
A cotton-canvas barn jacket with a cord collar; it will soften with washing.
    Mid
Waxed cotton with a tartan or cotton lining, re-waxable once a year.
    Investment
Heritage waxed cotton made in the UK, re-proofable for decades.
  2. Cream crew-neck knit

    Cream

A substantial crew neck in undyed wool, either plain or with a subtle texture. It should be bulky enough to fill the boxy jacket but short enough to sit at the hip.

    Budget
    A wool-blend crew in ecru.
    Mid
Lambswool or Shetland crew with a saddle shoulder.
    Investment
A hand-framed Shetland or Fair Isle-yoke crew in natural tones.
  3. Straight-leg jeans

    Mid indigo

A straight or slim-straight leg in a mid to dark wash, slim enough at the calf to tuck into boots without bunching.

    Budget
Rigid-look stretch denim in a straight cut.
    Mid
Non-stretch or low-stretch denim that moulds to you.
    Investment
Selvedge denim in a slim-straight cut.
  4. Flat, plain and close to the calf, in a cognac or dark-brown leather. The boot is the equestrian anchor; it should look functional, not fashion-heeled.

    Budget
Leather-look riding boots with a side zip; check the shaft fits your calf.
    Mid
Full-grain leather riding boots with a stitched sole.
    Investment
Made-to-measure or heritage riding boots that improve with polish.
  5. Cord-collared accessories

    Brown, cream

A leather belt with a simple brass buckle, a cream or tartan wool scarf, and a canvas-and-leather tote. Everything should look as if it could survive a muddy field.

    Budget
    Canvas tote with leather-look trims.
    Mid
Bridle-leather belt and a lambswool scarf.
    Investment
    A heritage leather saddle-style bag.

Wear it to

  • Weekend: Farmers' markets, country walks, a pub lunch. The look's natural habitat.
  • Travel: Ideal for a train to the countryside: the jacket's pockets hold everything and it shrugs off rain.

Season

Northern hemisphere. September to February in the UK, US and Canada. On colder days, add a quilted gilet under the jacket.

Southern hemisphere. Save it for March to August in southern autumn and winter. In New Zealand's South Island or regional Victoria, it is the perfect weekend uniform.
